Each year swim meets are held that bring different cultures together in an open and inclusive atmosphere to enjoy swimming. These “cultural swim meets” are important because they celebrate different ethnic heritages or cultural icons (Martin Luther King, Hispanic Heritage Month, Black History Month, etc.) that are important to a specific ethnic group. Some of these meets like the Martin Luther King Jr. Swim Invitational Swim Meet have been around for over 30 years. These types of swim meets are important because not only do they celebrate a cultural heritage or icon but they allow meet organizers to use these types of meets as a way to expose swimming to different groups in their community. Oftentimes attending a cultural swim meet is a family’s first experience with swimming. USA Swimming is committed to celebrating cultural heritages through continued partnerships with USA Swimming cultural swim meets.
