Kate Ziegler (Great Falls, Va./The Fish) narrowly missed yet another long standing distance freestyle record on Thursday, coming within two-hundredths of Janet Evans’ 1000y freestyle American record at the Eastern Zone Southern Sectionals in Fairfax, Va.
In the process, Ziegler, 16, shattered two 15-16 National Age Group records, breaking Jane Skillman’s 1990 record in the 1000y free by five seconds and Tiffany Cohen’s 1983 record in the1650y free by six seconds.
Ziegler was swimming in the 1650y free, and at the 1000 mark, she flipped in 9:25.51, just off the record of 9:25.49 Evans set on March 25, 1989. Ziegler finished the race in 15:40.89, the second fastest mile in history.
In February, Ziegler broke Sippy Woodhead’s 25-year-old American record in the 800m free at the FINA World Cup in East Meadow, N.Y., which at the time was the oldest American record on the books.
