
The 2008 Speedo Junior National Championships got off to a blistering start this evening in Austin, Texas. A total of 10 individual meet records fell on the opening night, with Amber McDermott responsible for four of those records.
McDermott started the meet with by lowering back-to-back records in the 500y freestyle and 200y IM. Later in the evening, McDermott erased her own records to win the 500y free in a time of 4:38.89 and the 200y IM in 1:58.77.
Martin Grodziki also lowered his own meet record set during prelims in the men’s 500y free. During finals, he swam a time of 4:19.65 to eclipse the record by three seconds. Evan Gregg shaved a second off his record in finals to win the men’s 200y IM in a time of 1:48.01.
Other gold medalists from the evening include Gretchen Jaques who broke the women’s 50y free meet record with a time of 23.00 and Tommy Gutman in the men’s 50y free.
Junior Nationals continue tomorrow with the men’s and women’s 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 free, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke. Check usaswimming.org and swimnetwork.com for complete results and highlights.
