Olympic gold medalists Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.) and Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill.) set meet records Sunday, on the third night of competition at the 2009 Southern California Grand Prix of Swimming in Long Beach, Calif. Lochte won gold and set a meet record in the 200y free with a time of 1:33.32 and Grevers broke the meet record in the 50y free to win gold in 19.15.
On the women’s side, Mary DeScenza (Naperville, Ill.) added to her USA Swimming Grand Prix Series medal haul Sunday night, winning both the 200y free and the 50y free. DeScenza took an early lead in the 200y free to come out on top in 1:43.93. Lacey Nymeyer (Tucson, Ariz.) was second in 1:47.08 and Chloe Sutton (Mission Viejo, Calif.) was third in 1:47.72. DeScenza earned her second gold of the night in the 50y free with a time of 22.66. Rugile Mileistye of Lithuania placed second in 22.78 and Nymeyer rounded out the top three in 22.81. DeScenza is the current point leader in the USA Swimming Grand Prix Series, which awards the Series winner with a $20,000 prize.
In the men’s 200y free, Lochte was followed by Olympic gold medalist Ous Mellouli (Tunisia), who took the silver in 1:33.55, and Grevers, who earned the bronze in 1:34.31. In the men’s 50y free, Grevers edged out William Copeland (Lexington, Va.), who placed second in 19.70. Lochte and Joey Hale (Redlands, Calif.) tied for third with a time of 19.74.
In his second race of the night, Mellouli won gold in the 400y IM. He came from behind to overtake Japan’s Sano Hidemasa in the breaststroke leg of the event and win in 3:41.09. Hidemasa finished just behind Mellouli for second in 3:41.39 and Austin Brown (Redlands, Calif.) was third in 3:52.33. In the women’s 400y IM, Lyndsay DePaul (Orange, Calif.) won gold with a time of 4:13.71. Meghan Hawthorne (Granada Hills, Calif.) earned the silver in 4:14.61 and Jessie Schmitt (San Diego, Calif.) won the bronze in 4:15.78.
Keri Hehn (Fargo, N.D.) took in early lead in the women’s 200y breast to win gold in 2:09.56. Jordan Danny (Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) placed second in 2:11.18 and Caitlin Leverenz (Tucson, Ariz.) finished third in 2:11.77. Cody Miller (Las Vegas, Nev.) won the men’s 200y breast in 1:59.33. Trevor Hoyt (Yucaipa, Calif.) was second in 2:02.22 and Carl Mickelson (Chandler, Ariz.) was third in 2:02.24.
The Southern California Grand Prix of Swimming presented by Vintage Design Incorporated concludes Monday with 12 events. The competition will include prelims and finals in the men’s and women’s 100y fly, 100y back, 100y breast, and the 200y IM. The finals session will also feature the 400y medley relay and there will be a timed final in the men’s and women’s 1650y free. Prelims begin at 9 a.m. and finals start at 4 p.m. Race footage from the meet will be broadcast LIVE on www.swimnetwork.com.
