USA Swimming Names 2014 U.S. Youth Olympic Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – USA Swimming today announced the six swimmers and two staff members who will represent Team USA at the second summer edition of the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China. All team nominations are subject to approval by the United States Olympic Committee, which will announce the full roster later this month.

The swimming portion of the Games is scheduled for Aug. 17-22 at the Nanjing Olympic Sports Center.

The three women nominated to represent Team USA in Nanjing include Hannah Moore (Cary, N.C.), Courtney Mykkanen (Tustin, Calif.) and Clara Smiddy (Miami, Fla.).
On the men’s side, Patrick Conaton (Larchmont, N.Y.), Patrick Mulcare (Tigard, Ore.) and Justin Wright (Fresno, Calif.) have been nominated to the Youth Olympic Team.

USA Swimming could potentially add two additional team members (one male, one female) at a later date depending on the final qualifications of all sports.

A member of the USA Swimming National Junior Team, Smiddy headlines the women’s roster after winning three bronze medals at the 2013 FINA World Junior Championships. She also posted podium finishes in the 100- and 200-meter backstrokes at 2013 Speedo Junior Nationals.

Mykkanen posted top-five finishes in both backstroke events at last year’s Speedo Junior Nationals and U.S. Open, while Moore won the 500-yard free at 2013 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals and added two additional top-four finishes.
Among the men’s nominees, Wright is a National Junior Team member and was a bronze medalist in the 200m butterfly at 2013 Speedo Junior Nationals and the 2012 Junior Pan Pacific Championships.

Conaton logged top-six finishes in both backstroke events at last year’s Speedo Junior Nationals, while Mulcare was a finalist in the 200m and 400m individual medleys at 2013 Speedo Junior Nationals and won a pair of relay medals at the meet.

Nominated athletes were selected based on the world rankings of times posted in Olympic events at one of six meets between July 2013 and May 2014. Complete selection procedures are outlined at usaswimming.org.

The event line-up for each athlete in Nanjing will be announced at a later date. Complete Youth Olympic Games details can be found at nanjing2014.com.

A team manager for USA Swimming at a number of major international events, Jeri Marshburn (Corona, Calif.) of Irvine Novaquatics will make her debut as Team USA’s head coach at an international competition. She was an assistant manager for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team and was the head women’s manager at the 2009 and 2011 FINA World Championships.

Bob Staab (Bartlesville, Okla.) of Phillips 66 Splash Club will serve as team manager after traveling with USA Swimming in a similar role at a number of international meets.
