WUGs: Day 5 Prelims Rundown


Day five of the preliminary races concluded today at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia. Jack Conger (Rockville, Md.), Kyler Van Swol (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Cindy Tran (Westminster, Calif.) all earned top-qualifying times for the United States.

The morning session began with the men’s 200m backstroke. Conger secured the top semifinal seed after swimming a 1:58.87. Jacob Pebley (Corvallis, Ore.) won his heat in 1:59.72 and also advanced to the semis.

Both Chelsea Chenault (Walnut Creek, Calif.) and Megan Romano (St. Petersburg, Fla.) advanced to the semifinals in the women’s 200m freestyle. Chenault turned in a time of 2:01.56, and Romano finished in 2:02.34. The top seed belongs to Great Britian’s Caitlin McClatchey who found the wall in 2:02.34.

In the men’s 100m butterfly, Van Swol came into the wall in 52.37 to earn the top seed in the semifinals. Also advancing was Conger, finishing in 52.94.

Tran claims the women’s 50m back top prelim time, finishing in 28.59. Also advancing to the prelims is Kendyl Stewart (Carlsbad, Calif.). The 18-year-old finished in 29.26.

In the men’s 50m free, Michael Alexandrov (Champaign, Ill.) finished in 27.91 and earned a spot in the semifinals. Also competing for the U.S. was Cody Miller (Las Vegas, Nev.). Miller finished third in his heat with a time of 28.58, but missed the semifinals.  The top qualifying time belonged to Russia’s, Gliulio Andrea Zorzi, who finished in 27.72.

The final event of the morning session was the women’s 800m free. Ashley Steenvoorden (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Stephanie Peacock (Cape Coral, Fla.) finished one-two in heat two and advanced to the finals. Steenvoorden finished in 8:39.94, followed by Peacock’s time of 8:39.97. The top seed went to Italy’s Martina De Memme who finished in 8:38.12.
