Franklin, Lochte Sweep USOC Athlete of the Month Honors

Top performances at the 2013 FINA World Championships earned Missy Franklin (Centennial, Colo.) and Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.) Athlete of the Month recognition, the United States Olympic Committee announced today.

Franklin became the first woman to win six gold medals at the FINA World Championships, held July 19-Aug. 4 in Barcelona, Spain. She won individual gold medals in the 100- and 200-meter backstroke and 200 freestyle. Her time of 2:04.76 in the 200 backstroke was a meet record. In addition, she led the U.S. women to a gold-medal sweep in all three relay events (400 freestyle, 800 freestyle and 400 medley). At 18, Franklin has won nine career world championships gold medals – more than any female swimmer in FINA history.

Lochte led the U.S. men with four medals – including three golds – at the 2013 FINA World Championships. Lochte clinched his third consecutive world title in the 200 individual medley and added gold medals in the 200 backstroke and 800 freestyle relay. He also picked up the silver medal as a member of the men's 400 freestyle relay. His 15 career world championship gold medals and 23 total career medals rank second all-time.

Each National Governing Body may nominate one female, one male and one team per discipline. A voting panel selects the winners from the pool of nominees with online fan voting via Twitter accounting for 10 percent of the total vote.
