Missy Franklin Named U.S. Sports Academy Athlete of the Month

Following a record-setting six gold medals at the 2013 FINA World Championships, USA Swimming National Team member Missy Franklin (Centennial, Colo.) was honored this week as the U.S. Sports Academy’s female Athlete of the Month for August.

Franklin became the first woman to win six gold medals at the FINA World Championships, held July 19-Aug. 4 in Barcelona, Spain. She won individual gold medals in the 100m and 200m backstroke and 200m freestyle. Her time of 2:04.76 in the 200m backstroke was a meet record. In addition, she led the U.S. women to a gold-medal sweep in all three relay events (400m freestyle, 800m freestyle and 400m medley). At 18, Franklin has won nine career world championships gold medals – more than any female swimmer in FINA history.

Franklin is now eligible for the Academy’s female 2013 Athlete of the Year Award. For the 29th consecutive year, the Academy will oversee the worldwide online voting that will take place in December. This prestigious award is currently done in conjunction with NBC Sports.
