5/8/2014

May-June 2014 Splash Digital. (Medium)The May-June 2014 edition of Splash Digital is now available online and as a mobile app for your iPad and iPhone.

Here’s a look at some of the stories you’ll find in this issue:

The Funnest Sport There Is
We know swimming is fun, but does everyone else? When you talk about how awesome swimming is to your friends, are they surprised? After a little research, the folks at Splash found that most people outside the sport view swimming to be less fu

n than basketball, football or soccer, and they don’t see it as a social sport. But those of us in the sport know they’ve got it all wrong

Dara Torres Knows What’s Fun

The sport of swimming means a lot to five-time Olympian Dara Torres. It’s given her so much in life, and its rewards far exceed the 12 Olympic medals she won over the course of her career. It’s also a lot of fun. Torres, now 47 and a devoted mother to her daughter Tessa, has built up a lifetime of memories from her years in the pool. Here are some fun – and funny – stories that stick out most in her mind.

Into the Great Wide Open
Though it’s natural to compare Olympic gold medalist Brooke Bennett’s comeback to that of Dara Torres or Janet Evans, Bennett is taking a different route. If she makes it to the 2016 Summer Games in Rio – at 36 – she’ll do so in open water swimming, an event that only debuted at the Olympics in 2008.

One of the Family
When the International Swimming Hall of Fame recognizes USA Swimming Executive Director Chuck Wielgus during the organization’s 50th Annual Honoree Induction Weekend June 13-15 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Wielgus will not only be acknowledged for the tremendous impact he’s had on the sport over the past 17 years, but he’ll also be accepted into a very select crowd. Having come to USA Swimming from a business and not a swimming background, he said he often felt like a guest. Now, he knows he’s family.
