Okubo Wins 200m Fly to Open Speedo Junior Nationals


Hometown favorite Corey Okubo (Irvine, Calif.) of the Aquazot Swim Club was victorious in the men’s 200-meter butterfly to highlight the opening night of the 2014 Speedo Junior National Championships at the William Woollett, Jr. Aquatic Center in Irvine, California. 

Okubo took control over the final 100 meters of the 200m fly to touch first in 1 minute, 58.30 seconds. Michael Thomas (Horsham, Pa.) of the Upper Dublin Aquatic Club grabbed second in 1:59.11, and Maxime Rooney (Livermore, Calif.) of the Pleasanton Seahawks was third in 1:59.26.

The meet’s first victory went to 14-year-old Easop Lee (Towson, Md.) of North Baltimore Aquatic Club, who convincingly won the women’s 200m fly in 2:10.40. Lauren Case (Woodstock, Ga.) of Chattahoochee Gold was second in 2:11.60, followed by Isabella Paez (Medley, Fla.) of Metro Aquatic Club in 2:11.94.

Lauren Barber (New Wilmington, Pa.) of the Jewish Community Center Sailfish won the women’s 100m breast in 1:09.72, edging runner-up Carolyn McCann (Gig Harbor, Wash.) of the King Aquatic Club, who was second in 1:09.84, and Jorie Caneta (Bakersfield, Calif.) of Roadrunner Aquatic, who was third in 1:09.88. 

Connor Hoppe (Merced, Calif.) of Clovis Swim Club earned the win in the men’s 100m breast in 1:02.17. Second went to Peter Kropp (Santa Clarita, Calif.) of Canyons Aquatic Club in 1:02.32, and Chandler Bray (Plainfield, Ind.) of Avon Community Swim Team took third in 1:02.87.

Coming out of the day’s earlier distance heats, Sam Magnan (Bethlehem, Pa.) of Parkland Aquatic Club earned the win in the men’s 1500m free in 15:28.58. Taylor Abbott (Cedar Park, Texas) of Nitro Swimming was second in 15:29.88, and Adam Linker (Cary, N.C.) of the Marlins of Raleigh was third in 15:30.79.

The women’s 800m free went to Sierra Schmidt (Erdenheim, Pa.) in 8:34.58. Madison Homovich (Pittsboro, N.C.) of the North Carolina Aquatic Club was second in 8:36.82, and Amanda Nunan (Ocean City, N.J.) of the Egg Harbor Township Seahawks finished third in 8:42.84.
