U.S. Wraps Up Team Title at FINA World Junior Championships


Team USA won seven medals – four silver and three bronze – Sunday on the final night of competition to secure a meet-best 26 total medals at the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships at Singapore’s OCBC Aquatic Centre.

The 26 medals for the U.S. included six gold, 13 silver and seven bronze, and Team USA totaled 973 points to secure the FINA World Junior Championships Team Trophy for the six-day meet. Michael Andrew  (Lawrence, Kan./Indie Swimming) was named male swimmer of the meet by FINA for his five-medal performance. 

Maxime Rooney (Livermore, Calif./Pleasanton Seahawks) won a pair of silver medals Sunday, touching second in the men’s 100-meter freestyle in 48.87 seconds and anchoring the men’s medley relay to second in 3:37.51. Joining Rooney, who won five medals in Singapore, on the relay were Michael Taylor (Alpharetta, Ga./Dynamo Swim Club), Reece Whitley (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Penn Charter Aquatic Club) and Andrew.

Taylor matched Rooney as a double silver medalist Sunday, as he finished second in the men’s 200m back in 1:58.39, just ahead of teammate Austin Katz (Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota YMCA Sharks), who earned bronze in 1:58.51.

Also winning silver on the final day of completion was Taylor Abbott (Cedar Park, Texas/Nitro Swimming) in the men’s 1500m free in a time of 15:16.35. Hannah Cox (Hartland, Vt./Upper Valley Aquatic Club) claimed bronze in the women’s 200m free in 1:59.28, as did Michael Thomas (Horsham, Pa. Upper Dublin Aquatic Club) in the men’s 200m fly with a time of 1:57.61.
