National Teamer Elizabeth Pelton set an American record Sunday in the women's 200 yard back at the Maryland Swimming Championship Meet in Annapolis, Maryland.
Pelton's time of 1:49.16 beat the time of 1:49.52 set by Olympic gold medalist Natalie Coughlin at the NCAA Championships in 2002. Pelton’s previous best time of 1:50.51 was from December 2010.
Pelton, who competes for North Baltimore Aquatic Club, moved from fifth to second all-time in the event, trailing only Great Britain’s Gemma Spofforth. Her time ranks third on the all-time list, behind Spofforth's U.S. Open record of 1:48.34 and Spofforth’s 1:49.11, both from 2009.
