Meyer is 42nd and Ryan is 50th in Men’s 10K at FINA World Championships


BARCELONA – Alex Meyer and Sean Ryan represented the U.S. in the men’s 10k today, placing 42nd and 50th,Alex Meyer (medium) respectively. The competition, taking place at Moll de la Fausta, lasted just under two hours.

The competition was won by Greece’s Spryidon Gianniotis. He was followed by Germany’s Thomas Lurz, who placed second, and Tunisia’s Oussama Mellouli, who was third.

Both U.S. men started the race strong as Ryan was in fourth after the first 2.5k lap and Meyer was in ninth. At the halfway point, Ryan had fallen to ninth and Meyer was 22nd. The strong men’s field kept a quick pace and Ryan was in 15th after lap three while Meyer was in 34th. Meyer ended the race in 42nd and was 1:50 seconds behind the leader while Ryan finished 50th and was 2:31.9 behind the gold medalist from Greece.

The swimming action at the FINA World Championships continues with the women’s 10k on Tuesday, July 23. Open water competition runs through July 27. The pool portion of the Championships will take place between July 28 and August 4. For more information visit
