Five Captains Selected for WUGs
The USA Swimming team selected its five captains for the World University Games today, which runs July 10-17 in Kazan, Russia. The 42 athletes on the team roster voted Liv Jensen (Palo Alto, Calif.), Megan Romano (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Laura Sogar (Exter, R.I.) as the women’s captains and Michael Alexandrov (Champaign, Ill.) and Austin Surhoff (Cockeysville, Md.) as the men’s.
“I’m honored that the team voted for me,” said Romano, a gold medalist in the 4x200 meter relay at the 2011 World University Games. “It’s a young team, so it’s great to have them look to me as an example and lean on me since I’ve been through this before.”
“I’ve been to a lot of international events,” said Alexandrov, who's also making his second World University Games appearance. “It means a lot to me that the team believes I have the experience to give them advice.”
Taking place every two years, the World University Games are an international, multi-sport event organized for university athletes by the International Sports Federation. Swimmers were selected to the 2013 World University Games Team roster based on their performance at the 2012 U.S. Open Championships and the 2013 Open Water National Championships. .
The pool competition in Kazan, Russia, is set for July 10-16 followed by the open water competition scheduled for July 17. For more information on this year’s Games, visit http://kazan2013.ru/en
