USA Swimming, Schubert Part Ways
USA Swimming will open a search for a new National Team Director after parting ways with National Team Head Coach and General Manager Mark Schubert. Schubert served in the position for four-and-a-half years.
“I continue to have the highest admiration and respect for Mark Schubert and for his accomplishments and contributions to the sport,” said USA Swimming Executive Director Chuck Wielgus,” I am saddened by this parting of ways as I was the one who sought out and recruited Mark for the job at USA Swimming. I know Mark still has much to give to the sport he loves and wish him the best in his future endeavors.”
Former USA Swimming President Jim Wood is serving as interim National Team leader.
USA Swimming will look to name a new National Team Director by the spring of 2011. Applications will be accepted through the end of the year and candidates will be reviewed by an Application Review Committee, which will include coach and athlete representation, in January. The National Team Director will be hired by the USA Swimming Executive Director in consultation with National Team volunteer leadership and staff.
The National Team Director is charged with providing vision and leadership for America’s top coaches and elite athletes with focus on their performance at the Olympic Games and other international competitions. The director is also directly involved in developing talent and mentoring coaches, participating in USA Swimming’s international relations efforts, formulating the high performance plan and managing the National Team staff.
