Multiple Olympians Headline 2013 USA Swimming Open Water National Championships


Alex Meyer 120Olympians Haley Anderson (Granite Bay, Calif.), Andrew Gemmell (Wilmington, Del.) and Alex Meyer (Ithaca, N.Y.) will compete at the 2013 USA Swimming Open Water National Championships in Castaic Lake, Calif. The 10-kilometer race is slated for May 17 and the 5K is scheduled for May 19.

The women’s 10K will start at 8 a.m. PT and the men will follow at 10:30 a.m. on May 17. The 5K race on May 19th begins with the men at 8 a.m. followed by the women at 9:30 a.m. Other top names competing at the National Championships include Sean Ryan (Chattanooga, Tenn.), Arthur Frayler (Ambler, Pa.), David Heron (Mission Viejo, Calif.), Ashley Twichell (Fayetteville, N.Y.), Christine Jennings (Longmont, Colo.), Eva Fabian (Keene, N.H.) and Becca Mann (Saint Petersburg, Ill.).

Anderson became the first U.S. swimmer to earn an Olympic medal in the 10K, as she took home the silver at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Meyer, who also represented the U.S. at the London Games in the 10K, was the 2009 World Champion in the 25K.

The top-two finishers in each division of the 10K will be selected to swim at the FINA World Championships in Barcelona, Spain. The men’s and women’s winner will also have the option of swimming in the 5K and 25K at the World Championships. The first-place finishers in men’s and women’s the 5K will be selected to swim the 5K at the World Championships. In addition, the top-six finishers in the 10K will make up the 2013-14 Open Water National Team, while the next top-six athletes – under the age of 18 – will determine the National Junior Team.

The 10K at Open Water National Championships will also serve as the selection competition for the 2013 World University Games that will take place in Kazan, Russia. Top finishers that meet the selection criteria and do not swim at the World Championships will be eligible to compete at the World University Games.
