Jaeger wins 500 free on first night of NCAAs


Olympian Connor Jaeger of the University of Michigan won the 500-yard freestyle Thursday at the NCAA Men’s Division I Swimming and Diving Championships in Indianapolis, turning in a time of 4:10.84. Jaeger touched about a half second ahead of fellow National Teamer Michael McBroom of Texas, who was second in 4:11.39.


In other events, National Teamer Kevin Cordes of the University of Arizona teamed up with Mitchell Friedmann, Giles Smith and Nimrod Shapira Bar-Or to win the 400y medley relay in 3:02.09. Another member of the U.S. National Team, Tom Shields, led Cal’s 400 medley relay (Anthony Cox, Trevor Hoyt, Shields and Fabio Gimondi) to a second place finish behind the Wildcats in 3:04.46.


Jaeger’s win Thursday was instrumental in giving Michigan a 19-and-a-half-point lead after day 1 with 153 points. Cal is second with 123.5 point, while Auburn is in third with 112.5 points.
