Southern Zone Diversity Select Camp Concludes

The Southern Zone hosted is first Diversity Select Camp and Summit July 11-14 in Charlotte, NC at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center. Seventeen athletes were selected by their LSCs to attend this year’s camp. The head coaches of the camp were Janelle Atkinson-Wignall (2 time Olympian for Jamaica) and Candess Tucker. Besides interacting with their peers and attending motivational and educational sessions camp attendees met 2012 Olympians Cammile Adams and Micah Lawrence. 2008, 2012 Olympian Cullen Jones also talk to camp attendees.

The Zone Diversity Select Camps serve an important role in the development of athletes. The camps are viewed as an integral step for athletes to move from the local and zone level onto to the national scene. During the three-day camp athletes from underrepresented populations will become empowered through camp programing to impact their LSC in and out of the pool. Camp programming includes pool training, motivational, and education sessions and team-building activities.

Held alongside the camp the Zone Diversity Summit brought Diversity and Inclusion Chairs and coach participants from the LSC’s in the Southern Zone together to hear from guest speakers, hold strategic planning sessions, and LSC planning workshops.

USA Swimming would like to thank the following LSC’s for sending athletes to this year’s first ever Southern Zone Diversity Select Camp and Summit – South Carolina, North Carolina, Florida Gold Coast, Louisiana, North Texas, South Texas, Gulf.

Special thanks to David Marsh and SwimMac’s Team Elite, Rodney Sellars, Janelle Atkinson-Wignall, Miriam Lynch, Mecklenberg County Parks and Recreation, and Southern Zone Diversity Chair Suzanne Dangelmaier.
