WUGs: Day 6 Prelims Rundown

Day six of the preliminary races concluded today at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia. The U.S. Swim Team had every swimmer from the morning session qualify.

The morning session began with the women’s 50-meter breaststroke. Laura Sogar (Exeter, R.I.) and Emily McClellan (Whitewater, Wis.) each moved on to the semifinals. Sogar finished in 32.07, while McClellan reached in 32.43. Czech Republic’s Petra Chocova earned the top seed with a swim of 30.67.

Both Derek Toomey (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Adam Small (Tempe, Ariz.) finished second in their heat and advanced to the semifinals in the men’s 50m freestyle. Toomey turned in a time of 22.43, and Small finished in 22.79. The top seed belongs to Russia’s Andrey Grechin, who hit the wall in 22.31.

In the women’s 200m butterfly, Jasmine Tosky (Palo Alto, Calif.) finished in 2:12.24 and earned a spot in the semifinals. Also advancing for the U.S. was Kelsey Floyd (Lexington, Ky.). Floyd finished in 2:16.37. Th top qualifying time belonged to Katerine Savard of Canada who finished in 2:11.38.

Megan Romano (St. Petersburg) and Liv Jensen (Palo Alto, Calif.) each qualified for tonight’s semifinal in the women’s 50m free. Romano earned the second overall seed with a swim of 25.20, while Jensen came to the wall in 25.82. The top seed went to France’s Anna Santamans in 25.00.

The men’s 4x200m freestyle relay team qualified with the second-fastest time. The team of Michael Flach (Annandale, Va.), Alex Wold (Santa Clarita, Calif.), Jacob Ritter (Austin, Texas) and Matt Barber (Kingwood, Texas) finished in 7:19.92. Russia had the top time at 7:14.47
