WUGs: Day 4 Prelims Rundown


For the fourth consecutive day, every U.S. swimmer advanced out of the prelims at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia. Laura Sogar (Exeter, R.I.) and Andrea Kropp (Santa Clarita, Calif.) set the tone in the first event, earning the top-two times in the women’s 200-meter backstroke. The women’s 4x200m freestyle team also locked up the top seed in the final.

The morning session began with the women’s 200m breaststroke. Sogar won heat three with a time of 2:26.17, and Kropp was the top finisher in heat two (2:27.86).

Both Michael Wynalda (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and Tyler Reed (Morgantown, Ky.) advanced to the semifinals in the men’s 100m freestyle. Wynalda turned in a time of 49.87, and Reed finished in 50.10. The top seed belongs to Russia’s Nikita Lobintsev who found the wall in 49.13.

In the women’s 100m butterfly, Kelsey Floyd (Lexington, Ky.) and Jasmine Tosky (Palo Alto, Calif.) finished one-two in heat four. Floyd touched in 1:00.19 followed by Tosky’s time of 1:00.52. The top time of 58.21 went to Canada’s Katerine Savard.

Sean Ryan (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Ryan Feeley (Rye, N.Y.) advanced to the finals of the men’s 800m free. Ryan finished in 8:24.06 and Feeley in 8:00.92. The top seed goes to Canada’s Eric William Hedlin who finished in 7:56.68.

The final event of the morning session was the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay. The team of Andrea Murez (Venice, Calif.), Melanie Margalis (Clearwater, Fla.), Rachael Acker (Palo Alto, Calif.) and Chelsea Chenault (Walnut Creek, Calif.) finished in 8:00.74 to earn the No. 1 overall seed.
