After finishing 2013 with standout performances throughout the year, Katie Ledecky (Bethesda, Md.) and Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.) were named the 2013 FINA Athletes of the Year for swimming, as announced today by FINA.

With emphasis placed on performances at the 2013 FINA World Championships, these awards recognize the world’s top swimmers for 2013.

Ledecky wrapped up 2013 with multiple honors. She earned four gold medals at the FINA World Championships in Barcelona while also securing world-record times in two different events. She won the 400m free and also the 800m free with a world record time of 8:13.86. Her second world-breaking performance was in the 1500m free after completing the event in 15:36.53. The 16-year-old also took home gold in Barcelona as a member of the 800m free relay team. Ledecky also claimed the titles of 2013 U.S. Olympic Committee SportsWoman of the Year and 2013 USA Swimming Athlete of the Year.

With the 2013 honor, Lochte now holds three FINA Athlete of the Year awards after also receiving the accolade in 2010 and 2011. He led the U.S. men at the 2013 FINA World Championships in Barcelona with three gold medals and one silver medal. Lochte was the 2013 world champion in the 200m back, 200m IM and as a member of the 800m free relay team. He also went on to receive silver honors in the 400m free relay.

Along with being named the FINA Athletes of the Year for 2013, both Ledecky and Lochte were also named Athletes of the Year at the 2013 Golden Goggle Awards in November 2013. Ledecky was awarded the title of Female Athlete of the Year, while Lochte was named the Male Athlete of the Year.
