USA Swimming and Maritza Correia Participate in the 74th Annual Sigma Gamma Rho Central Region Conference

As part of the Swim 1922 partnership with Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated, USA Swimming participated in the 74th Annual Sigma Gamma Rho Central Region Conference in Chicago this past weekend along with Olympian and Swim 1922 Spokeswoman, Maritza Correia. The three-day event of business sessions for the sorority was punctuated with swimming-related speaking opportunities, workshops, and a beginner’s swim clinic.

The clinic and major speaking engagement was given on behalf of the Rhoers, the youth affiliate group of Sigma Gamma Rho that goes through educational and personal development as part of their mentorship track. The girls, ages 8 to 18, came from a variety of states within the Sigma Gamma Rho Central region.

Correia, who was the first African American woman to earn a place on the U.S. National Team and the first African American woman to win a medal, is also a Sigma Gamma Rho Soror, making her participation in the partnership significant to both the NGB and the sorority.

“I was excited to talk to over 140 Rhoers at the conference. The young ladies were ready to listen about the Swim 1922 program and the partnership between SGRho and USA Swimming and asked some great questions,” said Correia. “I think everyone is looking forward to the Swim 1922 Contest and competing against each other for the most points.”

The Swim 1922 Contest, which was also a topic of conversation at the conference, is one of the signature programs to come out of the partnership.

“It’s a way to encourage and empower the women to participate in swimming first hand and share the joy and benefits with their friends and family,” said Rhonda Marable, Multicultural PR Manager of USA Swimming. “The contest pits region against region and member against member in a fun way that earns them points for their swim-related activity.”

The contest, which will last from April 7th to May 30th, is the first major Swim 1922 program slated for 2014 and is open to Sigma Gamma Rho members and their affiliates. Those not affiliated with the sorority can donate their swim achievements on behalf of any individual member signed up or any sigma Gamma Rho region.

The Central Regional Conference is the second regional conference at which USA Swimming has made an appearance, the first being the Southwest Regional Conference that was held in Little Rock, Ark. from March 14-16. USA Swimming will attend the Southeast Regional Conference in Charleston, S.C. on April 4-6 with another history-making Olympian, Cullen Jones as the guest athlete.
