Arena Grand Prix at Mesa Nominated for 2013 SportsTravel Award
USA Swimming’s Arena Grand Prix at Mesa was nominated by the readers of SportsTravel for a 2013 SportsTravel Award. The event ran from April 11-13 at the Skyline Aquatic Center in Mesa, Ariz.
The event was part of USA Swimming’s six-meet series designed to showcase the best swimmers in the country.
The three-day event featured multiple Olympic gold medalists including, Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.), Dana Vollmer (Granbury, Texas), Missy Franklin (Centennial, Colo.) and Nathan Adrian (Bremerton, Wash.). The star-studded field led to multiple sellouts.
The competition in Mesa also had the Arena Grand PrixView Featuring Aaron Peirsol. This event offered local youth swimmers, ages 8-12, the chance to compete in a relay event with Olympic gold medalists Aaron Peirsol and Janet Evans. In addition, the Autograph Arena was open to the public on the final two nights of competition.
Fans unable to attend the Arena Grand Prix at Mesa could watch the action via USA Swimming’s live webcast or on the Universal Sports Network.
The event is one of five finalists for Amateur Sporting Event - Best Single-Sport Event. Online voting is available until 5 p.m. PT on Sept. 15. The SportsTravel Awards will be presented at the TEAMS ’13 Conference & Expo, which runs from Nov. 4-7 in Salt Lake City. Click here to vote.
USA Swimming’s 2012-13 Arena Grand Prix Series served as an opportunity for swimmers to race against some of the best competition in the country as they continued their preparation for the 2013 Phillips 66 National Championships in Indianapolis, the World University Games in Kazan, Russia and the FINA World Championships in Barcelona, Spain.
