USA Swimming Staff Out and About

11/7/2013

Because USA Swimming is a member-driven organization, the staff is often on the road meeting with coaches, athletes and other stakeholders. Here’s a look at this past week:

Texas All-Star Camp :: Houston
Safe Sport Coordinator Liz Hoendervoogt and Sport Performance Consultant Scott Colby traveled to Houston this past weekend to present at the Texas All-Star Swim Camp. More than 60 swimmers from all five Texas LSCs were in attendance for the camp, which was hosted by Gulf Swimming.

Hoendervoogt facilitated the Safe Sport Athlete Training to a group of 65 swimmers. Here she covered things like inappropriate behaviors, setting boundaries and how to report an incident. She also provided resources for the athletes.

“It’s always great getting in front of athletes and showing them the tools and resources they have available to them,” said Hoendervoogt. “I feel like the campers took a lot away from the training session.”

At the camp, Colby spoke to athletes about goal setting, goal affirmations, mental race preparations and four strokes and underwater kicking.

“I love going around the country and delivering information to coaches, athletes and parents,” said Colby. “They soak up the information and become better coaches, athletes and swim parents. All are very appreciative of this free consulting service. At the same time, I learn something new from each club I visit, and I can share that information on future visits.”

Over the course of the week in Houston, Colby visited three clubs and gave two parent presentations, ran four workout presentations, gave 10 athlete presentations and 14 coach presentations.
