WUGs: Day 3 Prelims Rundown

Day three of the pool competition began this morning at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia. For the third consecutive day, the United States had every swimmer qualify for tonight’s final or semifinal race. Melanie Margalis (Clearwater, Fla.) and Stephanie Peacock (Cape Coral, Fla.) highlighted the morning session for the U.S., earning the top seed in their respective events.

The morning session began with the men’s 200m butterfly. Michael Flach (Annandale, Va.) won heat five with a time of 158.94, and Kyle Whitaker (Chesterton, Ind.) finished in 2:00.62. Both swimmers advanced to the semifinals. Hungarian Bence Biczo touched in 1:58.43 to secure the top seed.

Margalis found the wall in 2:13.62 to secure the top seed in the semifinals of the 200m IM. Sarah Henry (Garner, N.C.) finished in 2:15.56 and will also be swimming tonight.

Both Michael Alexandrov (Champaign, Ill.) and Cody Miller (Las Vegas, Nev.) advanced to the semifinals in the men’s 200m breaststroke. Alexandrov turned in a time of 2:12.62 to take the second overall seed, while Miller touched in 1:15.10. Japan’s Kazuki Kohinata had the top qualifying time at 2:12.50.

In the women’s 100m backstroke, Cindy Tran (Westminster, Calif.) and Megan Romano (St. Petersburg, Fla.) locked up a spot in the semifinals. Tran’s swim of 1:00.89 gave her the second overall seed behind Russia’s Anastasia Zueva (1:00.82). Romano won her heat, finishing in 1:01. 78.

Jacob Pebley (Corvallis, Ore.) and James Wells (Phippsburg, Maine) advanced to the semifinals of the men’s 50m back. Pebley touched in 25.80 followed by Wells in 25.94. The top seed goes to Italy’s Niccolo Bonacchiwho swam a 25.18.

In the women’s 1500 free, both Peacock and Ashley Steenvoorden (Minneapolis, Minn.) advanced to the final. Peacock won her heat in 16:23.37 followed by Steenvoorden’s time of 16:28.94Japan’s Kohei Yamamoto earned the top seed with a time of 15:08.45.
