Veteran Open Water Squad Set for World Championships


LAlex Meyer (small)ed by a veteran group with considerable international experience, eight swimmers are set to represent the United States in the open water portion of the 2013 FINA World Championships, which opens Saturday in Barcelona, Spain.


The July 20-27 open water competition includes 5K, 10K and 25K individual events, as well as a 5K team event at Barcelona’s Moll de la Fusta.


Six of the team’s eight members were a part of the U.S. roster for the 2011 FINA World Championships, an event which saw the U.S. capture two medals, iChristine Jennings (small)ncluding gold in the 5K team event.


For the women, Christine Jennings (Longmont, Colo.) will swim the 10K and 25K events, and Becca Mann (Saint Petersburg, Ill.) will swim the 5K and 10K. Olympic silver medalist Haley Anderson (Granite Bay, Calif.) and world champion Eva Fabian (Keene, N.H.) will compete in the 5K and 25K, respectively.


For the men, Olympian and world champion Alex Meyer (Ithaca, N.Y.) will swim both the 10K and 25K, and Sean Ryan (Chattanooga, Tenn.) will contest both the 5K and 10K. Olympian Andrew Gemmell (Wilmington, Del.) will swim the 5K, while Jordan Wilimovsky (Malibu, Calif.) will race in the 25K.


Mann and Wilimovsky are the lone World Championships rookies on this year’s open water roster.


The team was selected based on their performances at the 2013 USA Swimming Open Water National Championships held at California’s Castaic Lake on May 17 and 19. Anderson and Gemmell won the 5k, and Jennings and Meyer were victorious in the 10K.


The 5K race will take place Saturday with starts of 10 a.m. locally for the women and 1 p.m. for the men. The 10K competitions begin at noon Monday and Tuesday for the men and women, respectively. The 5K team pursuit takes place Thursday, July 25 at noon. The open water competition concludes with the 25k race on Saturday, July 27 and will begin at 8 a.m. and 8:15 a.m. for the men and women, respectively. All start times are Central European Time and are subject to change due to weather conditions.
