For What Are You Most Thankful?

For most people, Thanksgiving is a time for watching football, eating lots of turkey and pumpkin pie and BlackThanksgiving (medium) Friday sales.

But as we all sit down to dinner Thursday, many of us will take a few moments to give thanks for family, friends and good fortune. The following are what former and current USA Swimming athletes are giving thanks for this year.

Laura Sogar
“This Thanksgiving, I am most thankful for being blessed with good health and a wonderful loving family. They are the ultimate support system, and I wouldn't be where I am today without them.”

Gil Stovall
“I’m thankful for God's perfect timing.”

Mary DeScenza Moehler
“I'm most thankful for my family and all the opportunities and love they have given me throughout the years. I'm lucky to have such a wonderful husband, child, parents, sisters, brothers and extended family.”

Nate and Megan Jendrick
“I'm thankful for the opportunity this past year to coach Megan and watch her improve in our unique training circumstances. Megan is most thankful for the ability to have a career in swimming (ACQUA and at the Fife pool) even after she has retired. And, of course, we’re both very thankful for our two-year-old son, Daethan, who is the reason for our unique training circumstances.”

Eugene Godsoe
“I am thankful for the people in all of our lives who give us love and support when things aren't going the way we planned. Having had an up and down career, I owe a lot to those who supported me even after I failed to reach a goal.”

Catherine Breed
“I’m thankful for sun, Bible study, break from school and swimming, cooking Thanksgiving meal with my grandma, gratitude lists, Grey’s Anatomy, Netflix and team time.”

Bobby Savulich
“I'm thankful for the skills swimming has taught me, such as perseverance, dedication and goal setting that I can now apply to my professional life. I’m also thankful for my University of Michigan college swim coach, Mike Bottom, for continuing to mentor me even though my NCAA eligibility has expired.”

Rachel Zilinskas
“I am most thankful for an amazing mom, dad, brother, and sister who have sacrificed so incredibly much for me; I love them all very much. And I'm also so thankful for my "family away from home" with the UGA swim team.”

Josh Schneider
“I am thankful for my dogs. I have two Border collie mutts, and what a blessing it is to be surrounded with such unconditional love every day, without fail. My dogs are great companions. I live by myself, and when no one else is around, my companionship comes in the way of furry creatures. It’s never a dull moment with these two around. We are wrestling, playing ball or chasing each other, and my favorite – creating a real “dog pile.” They get me outside, whether it’s taking them for a walk or playing ball, it’s a great way to break free from the T.V or my cell phone. My time with them gives me a reality check that life is much more than materialistic things or worrying about the future. I get to enjoy the moment. I feel like living in the moment is rare these days, and my dogs are giving that back to me and I am thankful for that!”

Jasmine Tosky
“I'm thankful to be where I am today. I can't complain about my life thanks to the family and friends who have given me everything I need to be me and my best.”

Charlie Houchin
“As Baloo the Bear would say from the Jungle Book, the bare necessities. I’m thankful for my family, my faith, and great opportunities for creating better relationships every day.”

David Walters
“I'm very thankful for the things I have in life. This Thanksgiving, I’ll be visiting my family in Ventura, California. My dad and I plan to go surfing, and with swimming in mind, I'm able to explore my true passion, the ocean more deeply. Literally! We charge! But this year I give thanks to a sport I dedicated so many years to and yet I'm still opening new doors.”

Ariana Kukors
“I am thankful for an amazing support system! Throughout my career, my amazing group of family and friends were always there to lend a listening ear or helping hand. They helped me get through the tough times and made the success that much sweeter!”

Adam Small
“I am thankful for the tight nit swimming community. It’s truly amazing to be a part of a community of passionate individuals who are always willing to help one another with almost any facet of life.”

Hayley McGregory Mortimer
“I’m so thankful for my family (husband and the addition of our beautiful daughter this year!!!!!!). I am also thankful for the talent I was given and the opportunity to find that talent and reach my potential ....None of which would be possible without my parents and long-time coach Randy Reese.”

Kara Lynn Joyce
“I'm thankful for my brother & sister-in-law making the trek from Atlanta to Denver to spend the weekend with me and celebrate this wonderful time of year!”

Ed Moses
“I’m most thankful to wake up every day with a healthy, functioning body to pursue my dreams and aspirations.”

Eric Wunderlich
“I’m thankful for not having to shave Carlton Bruner’s back ever again. Ha!”
