96 Swimmers Finalized to 2018 National Select Camp Roster

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Ninety-six top male and female age-group swimmers were chosen from across the country to participate in USA Swimming’s National Select Camp, the national governing body announced today. The camps, which are slated for October 11-14 for the girls and October 25-28 for the boys, will take place at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

“It is very exciting for us to be able to host some of the best young talent in the pool today,” USA Swimming’s Senior Director of Education, Programs and Services Mariejo Truex said. “The National Select Camp provides swimmers, who are on the cusp of reaching international-level competition, with invaluable opportunity, tools and experience to help continue the upward trajectory of their swimming careers.”

During the four-day camps, the 48 male and 48 female athletes attending their respective camp, will experience the day-to-day routine of a National Team athlete and swim in the United States Olympic Committee’s state-of-the-art training facilities. The campers will learn from top aquatic professionals about post-race recovery, psychological training skills, nutrition and race strategy. In addition, campers will hear from speaker and confidence coach, Christen Shefchunas, author of Naked Confidence: Revealing Your Whole Truth and Finally Moving Forward.

Megan Olson (Dayton Raiders) will lead the coaching staff of the boys camp, while Dan Jacobs (Machine Aquatics) will serve as the head coach for the girls camp. Emily Melina (Lake Oswego Swim Club), Alec Haley (Fishers Area Swimming Tigers), Brad Robbins (Tigard Tualatin Swim Club), Ian Goss (Stingrays) Bob Platt (Scottsdale Aquatic Club) and Andrew Nelson (Indiana University) round out the camp staff for the boys, while Megan Oesting (Eastern Iowa Swim Federation), Katie Callan-Wehrle (Magnolia Aquatic Club), Andrew Nguyen (Bellevue Club Swim Team), Paul Mueller (SOLO Aquatics), Heather Thomas (Redmond Aquatic Club) and Claire Mills (Bolles School Sharks) make up the camp staff for the girls.

In addition to the top-tier coaches and staff, 2018-19 U.S. National Team member Kendyl Stewart (San Diego, Calif./Team Elite) will be in attendance at the girls’ camp to share her experiences at the highest level of swimming. Stewart previously attended National Select Camp in 2008.

Swimmers are selected from the SWIMS database using their top time during the 2018 qualifying period. The three fastest athletes in each event, ranging from age 14 to 16, are invited to the camp.
