USA Swimming names Scholastic All-America Team  (10/16/2008)

USA Swimming has announced the selection of its Scholastic All-America Team for 2007-08.

Nine-hundred and seventy-four athletes made the team this year, including 600 women and 374 men.  Sixty-eight percent of the successful applicants had a 4.0 GPA. Fifteen percent of the athletes made the list for the third time in their careers.

Scholastic All-America Rosters:

Men’s List

Women’s List

Criteria for selection to the Scholastic All-America Team include the following:

  • Must have completed 10th, 11th or 12th grade
  • Must be a USA Swimming member athlete
  • Must have participated in an individual event that met the Junior National Bonus Time Standard during the qualifying period of July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008.
  • Must have achieved a 3.5 GPA

Additionally, swimmers who competed in an individual event in the 2007 Open Water National Championships and met the academic, grade level and membership requirements were eligible to apply. Swimmers with disabilities must have competed in the 2007 U.S. Paralympics Swimming Championships (December 6-8) in College Park, MD or the 2008 U.S. Paralympics Swimming Trials (April 3-5) in Minneapolis, MN.

As this was the first year of the requirement to achieve a Junior National Bonus Time Standard, swimmers who made the list in 2006-07 and competed in a 2007 Sectional Championship were “grandfathered” and eligible to apply through a waiver process.

Certificates and awards will be mailed to each Scholastic All-American later this fall.  Applications for the 2008-09 year will be available on the USA Swimming Web site Jan. 1, 2009.  Deadline for submission will be Aug. 1, 2009.

The Scholastic All American program is administered by the SAA Sub-Committee of the Times and Recognition Committee.  The program was begun in 1986 and has been staffed by dedicated USA Swimming volunteers from across the country for the past 22 years.  Questions may be addressed to times@usaswimming.org.
