U.S. Olympic Gold Medalists Shine at Arena Pro Swim Series at Austin
U.S. Olympic gold medalists Nathan Adrian (Bremerton, Wash.), Katie Ledecky (Bethesda, Md.) and Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.) were winners on night two of the Arena Pro Swim Series at Austin.
Adrian won the men’s 50-meter free in 21.85 seconds, and Ledecky took the women’s 200m free in a personal-best 1:54.43, for each swimmer’s second victory of the meet. Lochte won the men’s 400m IM in a pool-record 4:12.66 at the University of Texas’ Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
After winning the 400m free Friday, Ledecky picked up where she left off, taking the 200m free while becoming the fourth-fastest all-time performer in the event and the No. 2 American. She pulled away from Swedish Olympian Sarah Sjostrom (1:56.14) and Missy Franklin (Centennial, Colo., 1:57.49) over the final 150 meters to take the win.
“It was a really good field, and everybody loves to race. That’s what I love the most about these meets, especially the shorter races where I really get to get up and race,” Ledecky said. “I enjoyed the whole race.”
Winner of the men’s 100m free last night, Adrian completed a sweep of the sprints by edging Brazil’s Bruno Fratus (22.07) and Jimmy Feigen (San Antonio, Texas, 22.77) to take the 50m win.
Winning the 200m back titles were USA Swimming National Team members Maya DiRado (Santa Rosa, Calif.) and Ryan Murphy (Jacksonville, Fla.) in 2:08.19 and 1:55.99, respectively. DiRado bested Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu and Franklin for the victory.
International swimmers earning wins Saturday included Hosszu in the women’s 400m IM in 4:36.27, France’s Jeremy Stravius in men’s 200m free in 1:47.56 and Sjostrom in the women’s 50m free in 24.17 for her third win and third pool record of the meet.
The meet concludes Sunday with daily prelims at 9 a.m. Central followed by finals at 6 p.m. Tickets are on sale now online.
Television coverage from Austin will air on Universal HD on same-day delay Sunday from 9:30-11 p.m. Eastern, while NBC Sports Live Extra will stream Sunday finals live. A live webcast of the entire meet is available at usaswimming.org.
The Arena Pro Swim Series at Austin is the second of seven stops 2015-16 Arena Pro Swim Series.
