Galat Earns Second Win at U.S. Open


MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. –  Bethany Galat (Mishawaka, Ind.) collected her second individual gold medal Thursday on night three of the 2016 U.S. Open at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.

Galat won the women’s 400-meter individual medley with a time of 4:38.66, to add to her 200m breast gold from last night. Madisyn Cox (Lubbock, Tex.) placed second in the 400m IM with a 4:39.85, and Mia Nonnenberg (Scranton, Penn.) turned in a time of 4:42.66 for third. 

Sarah Gibson (San Antonio, Texas) won the women’s 100m fly with a 58.39. Hellen Moffitt (Alexandria, Va.) and Eva Merrell (Corona del Mar, Calif.) followed with times of 58.58 and 58.70, respectively.

Galat and Gibson went on to give Aggie Swim Club the win in the women’s 4x200m free relay with a time of 8:13.57, with teammates Claire Rasmus (New Orleans, La.) and Caitlynn Moon (DeKalb, Ill.).

Other wins on night three included:

  • Scotland’s Mark Szaranek in the men’s 400m IM with a 4:17.61
  • Brazil’s Vini Lanza in the men’s 100m fly with a 52.88
  • Australia men’s 4x200m free relay with a 7:23.48

The 2016 U.S. Open continues through Saturday with daily prelims at 9 a.m. CT, followed by finals at 5 p.m. CT.
