MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The final night of the 2016 U.S. Open wrapped as Zane Grothe (Boulder City, Nev.) earned his third gold medal of the meet. National Team Member Sierra Schmidt (Erdenheim, Pa.), as well as Madisyn Cox (Lubbock, Tex.) also collected their second wins. 

Grothe topped the men’s 800-meter freestyle with a time of 7:51.58, the ninth fastest time in the world this year. True Sweetser (Hernando, Fla.) turned in a 7:53.32 for second, while Wales’ Daniel Jervis placed third with a 7:59.16.  

Cox powered through the women’s 200m IM with a time of 2:11.27, dropping nearly five seconds from her preliminary swim for her second gold medal of the meet. Bethany Galat (Mishawaka, Ind.) followed with a 2:12.63 for second. Australia’s Sian Whittaker rounded out the top-three finishers with a 2:14.53. 

Schmidt earned her second gold medal in the women’s 1500-meter freestyle, finishing with a time of 16:20.40. Erica Sullivan (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Stephanie Marchuk (Winnetka, Ill.) followed with times of 16:25.92 and 16:26.99, respectively. 

Max Willamson (Fort Mitchell, Ky.) won the men’s 200m IM with a 2:00.97 over Ecuador’s Tom Peribonio and Scotland’s Mark Szaranek. 

Bowe Becker (Las Vegas, Nev.) earned gold in his collegiate pool in the men’s 50m free after posting a time of 22.23. Junior National Team Member Michael Andrew (Lawrence, Kan.) finished second with a time of 22.42. 

Australia’s William Stockwell placed third with a 22.50. 

Australia’s Shayna Jack placed first the women’s 50m free in 25.13.
