A world record by the women’s 4x50-meter medley relay kicked off day two in strong fashion at the FINA World Championships (25m) at Windsor, Canada’s WFCU Centre.

Through two nights of competition, Team USA has earned nine medals – three gold, three silver and three bronze.

In the first event of the night, the women’s 4x50m medley relay set the world record by almost a full-second with a winning time of 1-minute, 43.27 seconds. Ali DeLoof (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Club Wolverine) led off the relay with an American record in the 50m backstroke with a split of 26.12. Lilly King (Evansville, Ind./Indiana University) extended the lead in the breaststroke leg and strong swims from Kelsi Worrell (Westampton, N.J./University of Louisville) and Katrina Konopka (Greer, S.C./Tucson Ford Dealers Aquatics) in the butterfly and freestyle legs secured the gold.

“I’m ecstatic,” said DeLoof. “The coaches told us we had the chance to do something special tonight and we did it. Our whole relay team is really happy.”
Shortly after the relay, Worrell went on to set an American record in the 200m butterfly with a time of 2:02.89. Worrell claimed the silver behind Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu who finished in 2:02.15. 

After breaking the American record in yesterday’s semifinal, King lowered her own 50m breaststroke record of 29.17 to 28.92 en route to gold. Teammate Molly Hannis (Santa Rosa, Calif./Tennessee Aquatics) claimed the bronze in 29.58.

Leah Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Cavalier Swimming) also set an American record in the prelim heats of the 800m freestyle in a time of 8:07.67. Smith will be the top seed going into tomorrow’s final.

The six-day competition runs through Sunday with daily prelims at 9:30 a.m. ET, followed by finals at 6:30 p.m. NBC Sports will offer live streaming of prelims and finals, as well as nightly television coverage in the United States on either NBC Sports Network or Universal HD.
