Melanie Margalis Earns Second Win of arena Pro Swim Series at Austin

Olympic gold medalist Melanie Margalis (Clearwater, Fla./St. Petersburg Aquatics) took the women’s 200-meter freestyle title for her second win in as many nights Saturday at the 2017 arena Pro Swim Series at Austin..

After winning the women’s 200m breast title on Friday, Margalis touched first in the women’s 200m free for victory No. 2 in 1 minute, 58.78 seconds. She closed quickly over the final 50 meters to overtake fellow Olympian Hali Flickinger (Spring Grove, Pa. /Athens Bulldog Swim Club), who finished second in 1:59.20 at the University of Texas’ Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.

Olympian Jacob Pebley (Corvallis, Ore./California Aquatics) also was victorious Saturday, as he cruised to the 200m back title in 1:55.95 – more than 4 seconds clear of the field.  Japanese Olympic medalist Daiya Seto won the men’s 400m IM in 4:13.80 for his second win of the meet, with teammate Shinri Shioura taking the men’s 50m free in 22.44 for his second victory. 

Canada picked up three wins on the night: Olympian Hilary Caldwell in the women’s 200m back in 2:09.76, Mary-Sophie Harvey in the women’s 400m IM in 4:37.89 and Michelle Williams in the women’s 50m free in 25.16. Venezuela Olympian Marcos Lavado won the men’s 200m free in 1:48.90. 

The three-day meet concludes Sunday with prelims at 9 a.m. CT followed by finals at 6 p.m. The finals session will be streamed via NBC Sports, while a live webcast of the entire meet is available at usaswimming.org.
