MESA, Ariz. – Paced by quick swims from Olympic champions Katie Ledecky (Bethesda, Md./Stanford Swimming) and Nathan Adrian (Bremerton, Wash./California Aquatics), 2016 Team USA Olympians won seven of eight events contested on night one of the 2017 arena Pro Swim Series at Mesa Thursday at the Skyline Aquatic Center.  

In her long-course season debut, Ledecky posted a 2017 world best in the women’s 400-meter freestyle, touching in 4 minutes, 1.01 seconds – more than 6 seconds clear of the field. Earlier in the session, she was fourth in the women’s 100m free in 54.78.

“I was working on the same kinds of things – just trying to be controlled up front and bring it home hard,” Ledecky said. “I did a pretty good job of that. I’m just looking at some technical things, and I’m not really worried about time at this meet.”

Adrian posted the second-fastest time in the world this year en route to a win in the men’s 100m free in 48.18.

“I didn’t go in here with any numbers in mind; this has really been about the field. We’re slowing down the first 50 and coming home good,” said Adrian, who closed in 24.94 over the final 50 meters. “It’s more about executing a race plan, and that’s probably what we’re going to do for the rest of the season.”

Other U.S. Olympians picking up wins Thursday included:

• Simone Manuel (Sugar Land, Texas/Stanford Swimming) in the women’s 100m free in 53.66
• Katie Meili (Colleyville, Texas/New York Athletic Club) in the women’s 200m breast in 2:25.67
• Josh Prenot (Santa Maria, Calif./California Aquatics) in the men’s 200m breast in 2:10.47
• Kelsi Worrell (Westampton, N.J./Cardinal Aquatics) in the women’s 100m fly in 58.60
• Tom Shields (Huntington Beach, Calif./California Aquatics) in the men’s 100m fly 52.42

The three-day meet continues through Saturday with daily prelims at 9 a.m. PT followed by finals at 5 p.m. Two days of television coverage from Mesa will air on delay on NBC Sports Network – Friday, April 14 and Saturday, April 15 at 1:30 a.m. ET. All three finals sessions also will be streamed live via NBC Sports, while a live webcast of the entire meet also will be available at usaswimming.org.
