Complete Day 2 Results

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Regan Smith (Lakeville, Minn./Riptide Swimming) won gold and set a junior world record in the women’s 100-meter backstroke and Indiana native Emily Weiss (Muncie, Ind./Cardinal Community Swim Club) topped the podium in the women’s 50m breaststroke on Thursday at the 2017 FINA World Junior Championships, presented by Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., at the Indiana University Natatorium.

Smith touched in 59.11 seconds to edge Canada’s Taylor Ruck, who was second in 59.23 after setting the world junior mark in Wednesday’s semifinal. Grace Ariola (Bloomington, Ill./WAVES Bloomington/Normal Y Swim Team) was sixth in 1:00.58.

“It was insane,” said Smith about setting her second junior world record. “Doing it at world championships in the 200 back at semis was crazy, and then after a kind of disappointing final, I really wanted to come back strong at this meet, and I’ve been thrilled with how it’s gone so far. I’m just really happy.”

In the women’s 50m breast, Weiss won the United States’ second gold medal of the meet in 30.78 with Canada’s Faith Knelson touching second in 30.91. Zoe Bartel (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins Area Swim Team) finished fourth in 31.28.

“It’s amazing,” Weiss said about competing in her home state. “Obviously, I know people love to travel for international meets, but having this meet on home soil gives me a lot more comfort and a lot more confidence.”

Smith followed her individual gold by leading off the United States’ 400m mixed medley relay in 58.95 to a silver-medal performance in a time of 3:46.80. She was followed on the relay by Reece Whitley (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Penn Charter Aquatic Club), Nicolas Albiero (Louisville, Ky./Cardinal Aquatics) and Ariola.

“My teammates with me on the relay were so great and so supportive and they made me feel so confident and so excited and I felt so pumped to swim for Team USA,” Smith said. “It’s such an honor.”

Other medalists for Team USA on night two included a two-three finish in the men’s 100m breaststroke with Whitley earning silver in 1:00.08, and Michael Andrew (Lawrence, Kan./Race Pace Club) following with bronze in 1:00.37. Kieran Smith (Ridgefield, Conn. Ridgefield Aquatic Club) picked up silver for the United States in the men’s 200m IM with a time of 1:59.56.

In the men’s 100m back, Drew Kibler (Carmel, Ind./Carmel Swim Club) finished fourth in 54.97, and Albiero was sixth in 55.29. Patrick Callan (Owasso, Okla./Trident Aquatics Club) finished fourth in the men’s 200m free in 1:47.61, while Trey Freeman (Salt Lake City, Utah/Baylor Swim Club) took fifth in 1:47.79. Andrew was eighth in the men’s 200m IM in 2:07.27, and Erica Sullivan (Las Vegas, Nev./Sandpipers of Nevada) finished eighth in the women’s 800m free in 8:39.20.

The six-day meet continues through Monday with daily prelims at 9:30 a.m. EDT and finals and semifinals at 6 p.m.
