Team USA Adds Five Medals Friday at World University Games


TAIPEI – The United States added five medals – one gold, three silver and one bronze – to its meet-leading medal total Friday at the 2017 World University Games.

Ali DeLoof (Grosse Point, Mich./Club Wolverine) touched alongside Kira Toussaint of the Netherlands to tie for gold in the women’s 50-meter backstroke in 28.07 seconds. Teammate Hannah Stevens (Lexington, Ohio/University of Missouri) followed in 28.14 for bronze.

Team USA individual silver medalists on Friday included Austin Katz (Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota YMCA) in the men’s 200m backstroke in 1:56.70 and Katie Drabot (Cedarburg, Wis./Stanford Swimming) in the women’s 200m freestyle in a time of 1:57.61.

Also winning silver was the men’s 800m free relay squad of Mitch D’Arrigo (Gainesville, Fla./Gator Swim Club), Maxime Rooney (Livermore, Calif./Pleasanton Seahawks/Florida), Grant Shoults (Laguna Hills, Calif./Stanford Swimming) and Jonathan Roberts (Southlake, Texas/North Texas Nadadores/Texas) with at time of 7:12.19.

In other finals Friday, Hannah Moore (Cary, N.C./NC State) and Kaersten Meitz (Waukesha, Wis./Boilermaker Aquatics) were seventh and eighth, respectively, in the women’s 800m free; Claire Rasmus (New Orleans, La./Aggie Swim Club) took fifth in the women’s 200m free; Robert Owen (Bridgewater, Mass./Virginia Tech) finished seventh in the men’s 200m back; and Andrew Wilson (Bethesda, Md./Longhorn Aquatics) was fourth in the men’s 50m breast.

Through six days of competition, the United States leads all nations with 21 medals – seven gold, eight silver and six bronze. Full results can be found at www.2017.taipei.
