Complete Day 3 Results

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Regan Smith (Lakeville, Minn./Riptide Swimming) and Andrew Abruzzo (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh Aquatics) won their second individual gold medals of the 2017 FINA World Junior Championships, presented by Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., on Friday at the Indiana University Natatorium.

One night after winning gold and setting a junior world record in the 100-meter backstroke, Smith followed with the 200m back victory in 2 minutes, 7.45 seconds – a meet record and just two-hundredths of a second off the junior world record.

“I tried to get to bed early last night and do everything to recover the right way,” said Smith about her back-to-back gold-medal performances. “This morning I was hurting a little bit … I was okay tonight. It felt pretty good, so I was happy with how I was able to do.” 

Team USA’s Alex Sumner (Swarthmore, Pa./Suburban Seahawks Club) took silver in 2:09.04.

Winner of the 400m free earlier this week, Abruzzo earned the 800m free victory in 7:54.58 with teammate and Indiana native Michael Brinegar (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo Nadadores) taking the bronze medal in 7:57.22.

“We’re just having so much fun as we’re swimming fast, and I really think that’s been something that’s helped all of us,” Abruzzo said. “You’re not thinking about yourself, you’re thinking about what you can do for the team. I think that’s why everyone is swimming well because it’s not about you it’s about everyone and you don’t want to let anyone down.”

Team USA’s mixed 400m free relay – Daniel Krueger (Deerfield, Wisc./McFarland Spartan Sharks), Matthew Willenbring (Austin, Texas/Austin Swim Club), Lucie Nordmann (The Woodlands, Texas/Magnolia Aquatic Club) and Grace Ariola (Bloomington, Ill./WAVES Bloomington/Normal Y Swim Team) – added silver in 3:28.17.

Ariola also was seventh in the women’s 100m free in 55.46.

In semifinal action, Michael Andrew (Lawrence, Kan./Race Pace Club) was the top qualifier in the men’s 50m free in 21.79 after setting the junior world record in this morning’s prelims with a time of 21.75. He followed with the top performance in the men’s 50m back in 24.67 after also setting a junior world record in that event in Friday’s prelims in 24.63.

The six-day meet continues through Monday with daily prelims at 9:30 a.m. EDT and finals and semifinals at 6 p.m.
