Greetings from Texas! This morning I began my day getting ready to leave for the airport by the single beam of a flashlight. Like many others, I experienced the wrath of Irma that left many parts of the south without power. I'm fortunate enough to have only lost power, and I'm hoping others are safe despite potential losses.
Upon arriving in Dallas, I made my first new friends on the shuttle to the Hyatt. The swimming family isn't shy so within minutes of hopping in the van I had three new friends from the Western Zone and another new friend from the Central Zone. After checking in at the hotel, I immediately saw the smiling face of Morgan Weinberg, who is our staff liaison for the Convention Ed. Committee. Registration was a breeze and the USAS staff was exceptionally delightful. Since it was a slower day, I set up shop outside of the Reunion conference rooms to catch up on work missed due to the power outage in Georgia. It was the perfect location as I caught many of my favorite USA Swimming folks as they left the day's Board meeting - they even had smiles on their faces. (Let's be honest, we've all been to our fair share of meetings and leaving with a smile on your face can be a win!) A few hours later and a small to-do list complete, I attended the Happy2Help Reception where I met Colleen, an Official for the North Carolina LSC who conducts Official trainings. Although I'm not an Official or our LSC Officials Chair, I was able to share with Colleen what Georgia has started doing with online training sessions which helps us reach more prospective Officials. You just never know who you're going to meet or what knowledge you have to share.
My day ended with a partnership dinner with our LSC brand representative. Business partnerships are more than a one-time contract. It's truly a relationship deserving of cultivating. Plus, we got to see a little bit of the city and enjoy the pleasant evening air. I just love being in new cities!
Our awesome LSC athlete reps finally arrived late this evening and we pow-wowed about the week ahead. They are taking over our Georgia Swimming Instagram story this week so be sure to check it out. I'll be at the Happy2Help Desk from 9-10am Wednesday morning so please come say hello!
First day of convention was busy but awesome! When I arrived at the hotel I quickly had to change and head to my first meeting. Because my flight didn’t come in until around 3pm, I missed my first SafeSport meeting. However, I made it in time for the second. This was the LSC Safe Sport Chairs Workshop. In this meeting all the Safe Sport Zone Reps gave reviews from each of the workshops earlier in the year. It was great to her what the other zones were working on in April and how each of the projects complimented each other. What was even better, was that there was food at this meeting. Despite, all of the interesting projects, the barbecue shrimp and grits was the highlight of this workshop. After SafeSport, I went to the vendor hall to check out the Happy2Help desk, here I mingled with various members of the Convention Education Committee! Then, I decided to check out the athlete suit. Here there were many new faces and a few familiar. It was GREAT to see some of the friends I’ve made over the past several conventions. After catching up and meeting some of the athlete reps, a few of us decided to test out the city rental bikes outside the hotel. This proved to be the highlight of the whole first day! I highlight recommend all convention attendees trying out these bikes at some point; however, try to find one with gears, there are a few hills around Dallas!
