Team fundraising can be a challenging task, but it’s one the Rockford Marlins in Rockford, Ill., relish, and their efforts to generate funds for their team earned them the recognition of Best in Fundraising at last year’s #SwimBiz marketing conference.
The team partnered with the Rockford Convention and Visitor’s Bureau and provided hot chocolate during the Stroll on State event as a way to raise money for their club.
“We partnered with the convention to provide hot chocolate during the event,” said Jennifer Franklin, who handles marketing and public relations for the team of 60 swimmers. “We were the only hot chocolate provider; our team and parents got together to figure out how many cups we’d sell, the pricing strategy, supplies needed, etc.,” she said. “We also wanted to make sure we figured out the best-tasting mix.”
The event wasn’t just an opportunity to lend a helping hand, but for the swimmers to be recognized in the community.
“On the day of the event, our swimmers were a huge help with serving and it was a great way to get our name out in the community,” she said. “Our swimmers had their swim team sweatshirts o,n and it was a good way to expose our team to the community.”
The opportunity to help out came about from an unexpected connection, which Franklin said can be a great way to uncover new fundraising ideas.
“Don’t be afraid to think outside the box,” she said. “It was a win-win for us, getting our name out there in our community and raising money. Use the connections you have on the team. You might be surprised the connections that you have and don’t even realize it, sometimes all you have to do is ask! One of our swimmer’s dads knew someone on the convention and helped get our name out there and it turned out to be a great opportunity for us.”
