Pieroni, NC State and Texas Shatter Records on First Night of NCAAs


Olympian and U.S. National Team member Blake Pieroni of Indiana University set the meet, NCAA, American and U.S. Open records in the men’s 200-yard freestyle, leading off the Hoosiers’ 800 free relay Wednesday at the NCAA Men’s Division I Swimming and Diving Championships. His time was 1:29.63, making him the first swimmer to break the 1:30 barrier.

The Hoosiers finished second in the relay behind North Carolina State University, which set a meet, NCAA and U.S. Open record in 6:05.31. Wolf Pack swimmers were Andreas Vazaios, Olympian and National Team member Ryan Held, Jacob Molacek and Justin Ress.

Pieroni, Mohamed Samy, Vini Lanza and Ian Finnerty touched in 6:06.01, which was also under the former NCAA and U.S. Open record it 6:06.53.

Texas finished third in 6:07.59, the team of Olympian and National Team member Townley Haas, Jeff Newkirk, Jonathan Roberts and Austin Katz setting an American record in 6:07.59.
