Six Team USA Olympians picked up victories on a windy Thursday evening to kick off the TYR Pro Swim Series at Mesa at Skyline Aquatic Center.

Olympic silver medalist Josh Prenot (Santa Maria, Calif./California Aquatics) picked up a victory in the men’s 200m breast in 2 minutes, 11.30 seconds after taking second in the 400m IM earlier in the session.

“It’s good to grind through it, good for training. It’s good to step up and work through that,” said Prenot on his tough double. “It makes you a tougher athlete and helps you perform under those conditions.”

His California Aquatics teammate Ryan Murphy (Jacksonville, Fla./California Aquatics) was just over a second off his 2018 world-best time and took the victory in 1:56.51 in the men’s 200m back.

Racing for the first time in 2018, Leah Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Tucson Ford Dealers Aquatics) took the women’s 200m free in 1:59.12. She edged three-time Olympian Allison Schmitt (Canton, Mich./Pitchfork Aquatics), who touched second in 1:59.57 in her first race since the 2016 Olympic Games.

“I knew that if I was watching the next Olympics and I never gave it a shot, I didn’t want that ‘what if,’ so now I’m here and whatever happens, happens, but I’m excited to be back and competing and this part of the journey is definitely exciting,” said Schmitt.

Other Olympians earning wins included Chase Kalisz (Bel Air, Md./Athens Bulldog Swim Club) in the men’s 400m IM in 4:14.08, Kelsi Dahlia (Westampton, N.J./Cardinal Aquatics) in the women’s 100m fly in 58.09 and Olivia Smoliga (Glenview, Ill./Athens Bulldog Swim Club) in the women’s 200m back in 2:10.94.

Additional National Team members taking victories included Tim Phillips (Vienna, W.Va./Team Elite) in the men’s 100m fly in 52.88 and Emily Escobedo (New Rochelle, N.Y./Condors Swim Club) in the women’s 200m breast in 2:26.80.

The Krayzelburg squad took home the 200m mixed medley relay win 1:45.09.

Vietnam’s Vien Nguyen opened the evening with a win in the women’s 400m IM in 4:44.68, and Egypt’s Marwan El Kamash closed with a victory in the men’s 200m free in 1:49.05.

The four-day meet continues through Sunday. Friday and Saturday daily prelims open at 9 a.m. PDT followed by finals at 4:40 p.m. The meet concludes Sunday with timed finals for the 1500-meter freestyle at 8 a.m. PDT.
