Double for Kalisz, Ledecky Earns Win No. 4 at TYR Pro Swim Series at Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – Olympian and world champion Chase Kalisz (Bel Aid, Md./Athens Bulldog Swim Club) doubled up with victories in the 200-meter butterfly and 200m individual medley, and Katie Ledecky (Bethesda, Md./Stanford Swimming) earned her fourth win of the meet Saturday to close the TYR Pro Swim Series at Indianapolis at the Indiana University Natatorium.

Kalisz opened his night with a win in the men’s 200m fly in 1 minute, 55.72 seconds and followed with the men’s 200m IM title in 1:57.63. He won three events in Indianapolis, including an individual medley sweep.

Ledecky took the women’s 800m free in 8:07.27 – the third-fastest swim in history and her quickest effort in the event since winning gold at the 2016 Olympic Games. She also won the 200m, 400m and 1500m free in her professional debut.

World record-holder Lilly King (Evansville, Ind./Indiana University) won the women’s 100m breast in 1:05.90, matching the top time in the world in 2018. In a highly anticipated local match up, fellow Indiana native and National Junior Team member Emily Weiss (Muncie, Ind./Cardinal Community Swim Club) tied for second in 1:08.07.

“It was good. I was talking to my coaches earlier this week and I said I wanted to be 2:24 [in the 200m breast] and 1:05.9, so I went 2:24 and 1:05.9. It was a pretty good race,” King said. “I think Emily swam well. I don’t think we’ve ever raced head to head like that before, so that was fun.”

Melanie Margalis (Clearwater, Fla./St. Petersburg Aquatics Club) claimed her third win in Indianapolis in the women’s 200m IM, touching in 2:10.26. She also won the women’s 400m IM and 200m breast earlier in the meet.

Also earning win No. 3 on the week was Zane Grothe (Boulder City, Nev./Mission Viejo Nadadores) in the men’s 800m free in 7:50.94 – 8 seconds clear of the field. He also won the 400m and 1500m free.

Other Team USA Olympians clinching victories on the final night of competition included Matt Grevers (Lake Forest, Ill./Tucson Ford Dealers Aquatics) in the men’s 100m back in 53.78, Hali Flickinger (Spring Grove, Pa./Athens Bulldog Swim Club) in the women’s 200m fly in 2:08.76, Olivia Smoliga (Glenview, Ill./Athens Bulldog Swim Club) in the women’s 100m back in 59.78 and Kevin Cordes (Naperville, Ill./Tiger Elite Racing) in the men’s 100m breast in 1:00.61.
