TATEYAMA, Japan – U.S. Olympians and world champions Jordan Wilimovsky (Malibu, Calif./Team Santa Monica) and Haley Anderson (Granite Bay, Calif./Trojan Swim Club) swept the 10-kilometer open water titles Tuesday at the 2018 Pan Pacific Championships at Hojo Beach.

Race Notes

  • Wilimovsky won his first career Pan Pacs 10K title and his third medal in Tokyo. He also won gold in the 1500m free and silver in the 800m free in the pool competition.
  • Wilimovsky swam toward the back of the pack for the first 3.5 laps (7000m) before surging to the lead just before heading out on the final 2000m loop. He built on his advantage over the final lap and touched 6 seconds clear of runner-up Eric Hedlin of Canada.

Jordan Wilimovsky (on the race conditions): “It was pretty fun, a little choppy on the outside of the course … Other than that it was really nice. The water was good.”

Wilimovsky (on swimming at the back of the pack for much of the race): “It’s a long race, so you’ve got to conserve energy. It was a long week of racing in the pool, and luckily I had enough at the end.”

Jordan Wilimovsky (on his experience in Japan): “It was a lot of fun and it’s super cool to be out here representing the United States. The Olympics will be here; It’s been a great experience and Japan is awesome.”

Race Notes

  • Anderson won her second straight Pan Pacs 10K title after also taking gold in 2014. She is a three-time Pan Pacs qualifier – 2010, 2014 and 2018.
  • Anderson swam toward the back of the lead pack for much of the race before making a move toward the front on the third lap. She was third with 2000m to go before surging ahead for the victory over the final straightaway.

Haley Anderson (on the conditions): “The conditions were really nice. The weather was beautiful. There were a couple of jellyfish but I didn’t notice them during the race.”

Anderson (on her race strategy): “With a small field my goal was to stay in the back for at least two to three laps and stay calm and then work my way up to put myself in a good position heading into the last lap.”
