Regan Smith, Gianluca Urlando Break Big National Age Group Records in Austin

GREENSBORO, N.C. & AUSTIN, Texas. – The Speedo Winter Junior Championships – East and West drew to a close Saturday, but not before two big records fell in the Western meet in Austin.

National Teamer Regan Smith broke the Short Course Juniors record in the 200y butterfly in 1:51.25. It also broke the 15-16 National Age Group record of 1:52.99, set by Mary T. Meagher in 1981.

National Teamer Gianluca Urlando of DART Swimming broke the 15-16 National Age Group and Short Course Juniors record in the men’s 200y butterfly in 1:40.91. The former National Age Group record of 1:42.10 was set by Michael Phelps in 2002.

Also in Austin, Katharine Berkoff of Missoula Aquatics broke another Short Course Juniors record, this time in the women’s 200y back, turning in a time of 1:50.16. She also won the 100 free tonight in a time of 49.21.

AJ Pouch of Team Rebel Aquatics set a Juniors West meet record of 1:55.04 in the men’s 200y breaststroke.

In Greensboro, National Teamer Alex Walsh of Nashville Aquatics broke the Short Course Juniors record in the women’s 200y breaststroke in 2:06.02.
