Eleven American Swimmers Competed in FINA Champions Series Meet in Budapest


Eleven American swimmers competed this past weekend at the FINA Champions Series meet in Budapest.

Justin Ress was the only American to take first place in an individual event, winning the men’s 50m backstroke in 24.68. Ress also swam on the winning mixed 400m free relay, along with Jeremy Desplanches of Switzerland, Siobhan O’Connor of Great Britain and Penny Oleksiak of Canada.

Matt Grevers finished second to Ress in the 50m back (24.88) and also took second in the 100m back in 53:09. Grevers teamed up with Laszlo Cseh of Hungary, Eitene Medeiros of Brazil and Holly Hibbott of Great Britain to finish second in the mixed 400m free relay. Cseh, Gerves,

A number of U.S. swimmers competed in multiple individual events, including Molly Hannis, who took second in the women’s 50m breast (30.77), third in the 100m breast (1:07.66) and fourth in the 200m breast (2:29.57); Michael Andrew, who took third in the men’s 50m breast (27.10) and third in the 50m butterfly (23.19); and Katie Meili, who took second in the women’s 100m breast (1:07.28) and third in the 200m breast (2:27.86).

Andrew and Meili, along with Anastasiia Fesikova and Vladimir Morozov of Russia, took first in the mixed 400m medley relay in 3:27.63.

Other American swimmers competing in individual events included Jacob Pebley, who was second in the men’s 200m back (1:56.67); Chase Kalisz, who was second in the men’s 200m IM (1:57.74); Kevin Cordes, who was fourth in the men’s 100m breast (1:00.75); Josh Prenot, who was fourth in the men’s 200m breast (2:11.60); Anthony Ervin, who was fourth in the men’s 50m free (22.82); and Dana Vollmer, who was fourth in the women’s 100m butterfly (1:01.23).

The FINA Champions Series meet in Budapest was the second of three stops on the series. The third and final stop will be May 31-June 1 at the Indiana University Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI in Indianapolis.

For the series, four swimmers face off in each event in a two-day, finals-only format.
