General Purpose/Philosophy:

USA Swimming is the National Governing Body for the sport of swimming in the United States.  USA Swimming promotes the culture of swimming by creating opportunities for swimmers and coaches of all backgrounds to participate and advance the sport through clubs, events and education.  Our membership is comprised of swimmers of every age and ability, all the way up to the Olympic Team, as well as coaches and volunteers.

USA Swimming is responsible for selecting and training teams for international competition, including the Olympic Games, and strives to serve the sport through its core objectives:  Build the base, Promote the sport, Achieve competitive success.  We administer competitive swimming in accordance with the Olympic & Amateur Sports Act and are committed to providing a safe and positive environment for all members.


Job Summary:

USA Swimming seeks to hire a full-time Director of Risk Management to work at its national headquarters office in Colorado Springs, CO. The primary role of the Director is to ensure that USA Swimming has a comprehensive and effective risk management program, liaison with its insurance brokers and claims managers, provide education and support to members, local swimming committees, and clubs, and support the organization’s athlete protection program.  The Director of Risk Management will report directly to the Chief Administrative Officer & General Counsel and work closely with the Director of Safe Sport/Associate General Counsel on Safe Sport issues and Chief Financial Officer on risk financing issues and retention structures.


Essential Job Functions:

- Primary liaison with brokers, insurers, claim administrators, and former captive insurer:- Support USA Swimming’s athlete protection and operational risk programs. Specific duties to include:

  • Handle runoff claim, insurance and post-sale issues with former captive insurer United States Sports Insurance Company (USSIC), new owner of USSIC, and fronting and excess insurers;
  • Work closely with USA Swimming’s insurance brokers and insurance underwriters on annual insurance renewals;
  • Work with USA Swimming staff on gathering exposure data for the renewal process, such as organizational information, property values, member demographics, financial information, and loss history for prior policy years;
  • Coordinate handling of participant accident claims and provide accident summaries to the LSC Operational Risk Chairs;
  • Update USA Swimming Board of Directors and leadership on all relevant USSIC and insurance matters;
  • Study industry best practices on risk financing and advise leaders as appropriate;
  • Work with USA Swimming’s general counsel, outside counsel and insurance counsel regarding claims against USA Swimming, Local Swimming Committees, clubs, and their officers and directors;
  • Review insurance and indemnity provisions in facility contacts and other agreements as requested;

- Support USA Swimming’s athlete protection and operational risk programs. Specific duties to include:


  • Complaints & Investigations
    • Assist General Counsel and Director of Safe Sport & Associate Counsel in development and maintenance of all reporting and communication policies and procedures on potential claims;
    • Meet regularly with Director of Safe Sport & Associate Counsel to evaluate all incoming complaints and make recommendations for actions;
    • Maintain communication on potential claims with insurance providers, insurance counsel and claims management staff as appropriate.


  • Operational Risk Committee
    • Serve as staff liaison to the Operational Risk Committee;
    • Work with committee to develop educational presentations at Zone Workshops and Convention;
    • Provide quarterly accident summaries to operational risk team members and LSC operational risk chairs;
    • Provide updates as required to operational risk training courses and manual.
- Other Duties
  • Coordinate issuance of 3,000 certificates of insurance (COIs) to clubs and 7,500 COIs to facilities through broker and certificates now system.
  • Attend meetings of the Board of Directors of USA Swimming as required;
  • Provide ongoing risk assessments, evaluations, reports, and communicate with senior management as appropriate;
  • Provide education and training on key aspects of risk management programs to staff, volunteer leaders and others, as appropriate;
  • Be available to help LSC and club leaders understand rules, policies and procedures related to risk management and Safe Sport. Coordinate communications with LSCs and member clubs through Member Services and Sport Development and Safe Sport, as appropriate.
  • Assist the Safe Sport Committee and Operational Risk Committee in drafting and evaluating legislation as deemed appropriate for submission and consideration at USA Swimming’s annual House of Delegates meeting.
  • Serve as liaison with USOC Risk Management and Security personnel.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the CAO & General Counsel and CFO.

- Qualifications:
  • College degree and a minimum of 7-10 years’ experience working as a risk manager.A legal background will be highly advantageous;
  • Superior understanding of the insurance industry;
  • Risk financing background and the ability to analyze retention structures;
  • Working understanding of insurance audits for claims and policy language;
  • Working understanding of the legal environment from a claim perspective;
  • Strong communication (verbal and written) and presentation skills;
  • Personal organization and attention to details;
  • Ability to balance priorities in order to best focus on key organizational initiatives;
  • Negotiating and influencing skills;
  • Persistence in completing projects and meeting deadlines;
  • Ability to engage and work effectively with brokers, claims managers, board members, attorneys, senior staff, volunteers and members;
  • Positive “can do” attitude;
  • Strong professional presence in representing USA Swimming internally and externally.
