National Select Camp

 

This camp is designed for the top USA Swimming member athletes in the nation to have a once-in-a-lifetime camp experience. Swimmers are selected from the SWIMS database of top times. During the camp, these swimmers will learn about post race recovery, drug and supplement rules, psychological training skills, nutrition, race strategy and more.

 

The 2023 National Select Camp will be held on October 12-15 (Boys) and October 26-29 (Girls) at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO.

 

52 male and 52 female athletes shall be selected to participate in each camp. 42 athletes from each competition category shall be selected following the September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2023 qualifying period based on long course meter performances in the USA Swimming SWIMS database. The fastest three eligible athletes in each Olympic event will be invited. Doubles will be resolved by placing the athlete in his/her highest HY-tek power point event. Additionally, 6 female athletes age 14-15 and the 6 male athletes age 15-16 with the highest individual IMX Power Point scores, who were not previously selected for an individual event, will be invited. Four athletes will be selected based on their performance at the Junior National Open Water Championships. Male and female camps will be held separately.

SELECTION CRITERIA

The camp will consist of 52 athletes from each competition category.

 

The fastest three available athletes from each competition category in each Long Course Meters (LCM) Olympic pool event will be selected for a total of 52 male and 52 female athletes.

Standard Selection

6 female athletes age 14-15 (3- 14 year olds and 3- 15 year olds) and the 6 male athletes age 15-16 (3- 15 yo and 3-16 yo) with the highest individual IMX Power Point scores during the qualifying window.

 

If a swimmer was already selected based on an event selection, then the next swimmer with the highest score is selected.

Additional 2023 Selection

Four athletes from each competition category (male/female) will be selected based on results from the 2023 USA Swimming Open Water Junior Nationals by the following:

  • The top two available 17 & under finishers in the 7.5k
  • The top two available finishers in the 5k
Camp Eligibility

Qualifying period:
September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2023. Only Long Course times will be considered.

Eligible athletes will be the respective ages at the time of the qualifying swim:

  • Girls: 14-15
  • Boys: 15-16

NOTE: Athletes who wish to attend the National Select Camp shall be US Citizens and be able to represent the USA in international competitions. Athletes who are on or have been on any National Teams/National Junior Teams or USA Swimming international trips will not be eligible for the National Select Camp. Athletes who previously attended the National Select Camp are also not eligible. Athletes must be Premium USA Swimming members. Flex members must upgrade their membership to be eligible to attend.

 

If a swimmer is qualifying based on the Open Water Junior Nationals Championship, then they cannot have qualified for the National Team and/or National Junior Team for Open Water or the pool OR represented USA Swimming internationally in an open water or pool competition.

Cost

Athletes each receive a maximum of $200 travel reimbursement for purchased airline tickets or mileage reimbursement following attendance at the National Select Camp. Please contact USA Swimming if this is a concern.


Lodging, meals & ground transportation are covered by USA Swimming for the duration of the camp.

Home Coaches

In 2023, the coach of a selected athlete is also invited to attend the National Select Camp in Colorado Springs, CO. The coach will be provided up to $200 in airfare reimbursement from USA Swimming. Housing, meals and local transportation for the coach will be provided by USA Swimming. Coach must complete a separate coach's process.

 

An athlete's home coach has the first right of refusal and final say in determining if a selected athlete attends the camp.

Camp Staff

Staff for the Select Camps will be selected in two ways. USA Swimming will select the Head Coaches & Head Managers for each camp. Four assistant coaches and an assistant manager will be selected by an application process. Coaching applicants must be the coach of an athlete at with 2022 Summer Junior Nationals time standards.

 

 


 

Camp Schedule

The National Select Camp will consist of five in-water workouts and a number of classroom sessions covering various topics. The goal of this camp is motivational and is not a heavy training camp.
