U.S. Swimmers Take to Berlin for FINA World Cup

Nearly 50 U.S. swimmers are currently in Berlin, Germany, getting ready to compete at the first leg of the 2021 FINA World Cup. The short-course meter competition is set to take place October 1-3, with prelims starting at 10 a.m. local/4 a.m. ET and finals starting at 6 p.m. local/noon ET.

In total, 41 junior athletes are making the trip, including 2019 FINA World Junior Championships competitors Erin Gemmell (Potomac, Md./Nation’s Capital Swim Club) Claire Tuggle (Fresno, Calif./Santa Maria Swim Club), current National Junior Team members Sam Hoover (Chapel Hill, N.C./North Carolina Aquatic Club) and Leah Hayes (Sugar Grove, Ill./Fox Valley Park District Riptides) and U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming Wave I Champions Zhier Fan (Plano, Texas/Metroplex Aquatics) and Camille Spink (Haymarket, Va./Nation’s Capital Swim Club). The 41 junior athletes were selected based off top 18&Under performances at the Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb. Eighteen members of the FINA Swimming World Cup U.S. roster posted a top-16 performance at Wave II of Trials. These 41 junior athletes will be joined by a quartet of U.S. National Team members in Lydia Jacoby (Seward, Alaska/Seward Tsunami Swim Team), Linnea Mack (San Jose, Calif./Team Elite), Blake Pieroni (Valparaiso, Ind./Sandpipers of Nevada) and Tom Shields (Huntington Beach, Calif./California Aquatics).

Notable competitors in the 240-person field this weekend are Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 medalists Kyle Chalmers (AUS), Emma McKeon (AUS), Florian Wellbrock (GER), Maggie Mac Neil (CAN) and more.
