USA Swimming Names Yuri Suguiyama National Team Senior Director and Coach

USA Swimming has announced Yuri Suguiyama as the organization’s new Senior Director and Coach of the National Team. In this key leadership role, Suguiyama will support all facets of the National Team program, guide performance strategies, and support the country’s top athletes and coaches through the Olympic quad.

Suguiyama will assist in all aspects of USA Swimming’s National Team Division, including but not limited to strategic planning, international competitions, domestic racing schedules, athlete and coach services, and long-term programming development.

“Yuri has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership and a deep commitment to athlete development in all levels of the sport,” said Greg Meehan, National Team Director. “His vision and experience helping club, collegiate, and professional swimmers make US Olympic teams make him an outstanding choice to coach and support our team.”

A respected coach with extensive NCAA, club, and international experience, Suguiyama brings a unique blend of on-deck expertise and strategic oversight to the role. His appointment marks a critical step in shaping the next chapter of American swimming excellence.

“It is an honor to be joining USA Swimming in this role and I’m thrilled to be working with Greg Meehan,” said Yuri Suiguiyama. “My experiences with the US National Team have been the highlights of my career and I’m ready to work and help our nation’s top athletes prepare for the competitions ahead.”

Suguiyama has coached the Wisconsin men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs for seven seasons, developing numerous Olympians, NCAA Champions, and All-Americans. Prior to his time with Wisconsin, he was the associate head coach at Cal from 2012 to 2018 and a coach at Nation’s Capital Swim Club from 2006 to 2012. His experience as a coach with Team USA is impressive, having been named Special Assistant to the National Team Director at the 2016 Olympic Games and serving as an assistant coach at the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships, the 2015 World University Games, and the 2023 LEN Championships. He also served as the men’s head coach at the 2016 Short Course World Championships.

Suguiyama, his wife Abby, and their children Luke and Kai will relocate to Colorado Springs, Colorado.
